The Gift Must Come First
Okay, I’ve finally pulled the scarf that I’m knitting for my mother back out of the knitting basket.

I vow to finish this before getting into my new project.
And my Green Gable is coming along. I’m almost to the stage where I can try it on, so I’ll post a pic then. However, I only get a few rows a day done on that because I actually hate knitting! What I mean is I prefer to purl. Am I crazy? I am a Continental style knitter, but I know that even so, I’m in the minority. Sometime I’ll get someone to videotape me knitting and maybe we can figure out why I prefer to purl. At any rate, the progress is slow on the body of this sweater, and consequently I can’t help myself from starting a new project.
I’m starting the Quinn Cabled bag because I need rescue from all this stockinette in the round. I’ve already gone down two needle sizes from a size 6 to a size 4 (Addi’s) and I’m still knitting too big. I must be the loosest knitter in the world. I ask you: what in the world will I do when I want to knit some Rowan pattern or socks that call for 1s? Hmmm? I haven’t tried it yet, but it’s a big fear of mine that I’m limited by my gigantic gauge.
Anyway, this pattern calls for a 3 inch gauge in the cable pattern and here is my swatch – a little off.
But I refuse to go down to a size 3, I just do. This is more comfortable. I figure it’s a purse, who cares if it’s a little big. The question is….will I run out of yarn? It calls for 2 skeins of Cascade 220 and that’s what I bought. My fingers are crossed, but I’ll try to calculate it later after I finish my mom’s scarf. I haven’t even told her about my blog yet because I don’t want her to see the Fuchsia Lace Scarf photos and spoil the surprise!

Hi there! Glad to see you’re starting the bag!
A couple notes in response:
1) Exact gauge is not so important for this project, as long as your swatch comes out to be a square. If it’s not square, then the top band and the body of the bag might not fit together well, though this could potentially be fixed during blocking.
2) 2 skeins should be enough for the bag. When I test-knit the bag, I actually finished the main bag with 1 skein only, and used the second skein for the handles. I had well over a hundred yards left over.
Good luck with the bag, and please let me know if you have any questions!
The cables look great, and I can’t wait to see more of the scarf, too! One tip for gauge is maybe wrapping the yarn around either more than one finger, or more than once around a single finger.
Sounds like you’ve got a lot going on, knitting-wise. I hope you get a picture of the Green Gable up soon; I really like the lace panel on that sweater.
